A group of Greek fishermen experienced an exciting moment off the coast of Corfu when they encountered a blue shark and captured spectacular footage of the majestic predator. The video, shared on the popular Facebook page “Fishing In Greece,” shows the impressive animal circling their inflatable boat at speeds of up to 30 kilometres per hour.
“Look, a shark right in front of us, under the boat – it’s huge! I’ve never seen one this close,” one of the fishermen exclaims excitedly in the video. A woman’s voice can be heard saying, “Oh my God… I’m shaking,” reflecting the mix of excitement and awe in this extraordinary moment.
The Blue Shark: Elegant Hunter of the World’s Oceans
The blue shark (Prionace glauca) belongs to the Carcharhinidae family and is found in tropical and temperate seas worldwide. These sharks are known for their slender bodies and long pectoral fins, and they have a distinctive appearance: a deep blue back, lighter blue sides, and a white belly.
Blue sharks can reach lengths of up to 3.8 metres and weigh up to 390 kilograms, although most specimens weigh around 200 kilograms. While they usually swim slowly, they can reach bursts of speed of up to 30 kilometres per hour when needed.
Their diet consists mainly of small fish and squid, but they are certainly capable of hunting larger prey. These sharks often form schools, which are separated by sex and size, and give birth to litters of 25 to 100 pups.
