Visitors can now explore shark diversity up close at Barcelona’s CosmoCaixa science museum. The exhibition “Tiburones. Los guardianes del océano” opened on 22 October 2026 and runs until 26 September 2027. It combines ten life-size models with interactive displays, asking what role sharks play in the sea and how they can be protected.
From the great white shark to the extinct Helicoprion
The exhibition was developed by the Australian Museum. Following stops in the United States and New Zealand, Barcelona is its first European venue, according to the “la Caixa” Foundation. The exhibits include models of a great white shark and a hammerhead, as well as a reconstruction of Helicoprion with its striking tooth whorl. They illustrate differences in body shape and ways of life.
A tour by Europa Press shows the models and gives an impression of the exhibition rooms.
Touch, explore and change perspective
The tactile exhibits include replicas of shark skin and a megalodon jaw. An interactive 3D scan takes visitors through a shark’s body. Another display lets them explore the surroundings from a hammerhead’s perspective. The digital, immersive area complements the models and presents the animals in motion.
The exhibition also addresses widespread fear of sharks and the threats to their populations. It focuses on how knowledge of these animals can help protect them. Guided tours and family activities complement the visit.
Exhibition included in the museum ticket
CosmoCaixa is at Carrer d’Isaac Newton 26 in Barcelona. Admission to the exhibition is included in the museum ticket; it is not a separate free attraction accessible without one. According to the organiser, standard museum admission currently costs eight euros. The museum lists regular opening hours of 10 am to 8 pm.
