On Sunday, August 9, 2026, a shark was reported near an active coastal area off Étang-Salé on Réunion. Rescue workers from the RESSAC organization discovered the animal during a patrol with jet skis. The surf spot was then evacuated as a precaution. There was no contact with people, and no one was injured.
Imaz Press Réunion reports a bull shark approximately 1.50 meters long. The observation took place towards the end of the morning along the surf zone at spot Le Bord. The animal swam north and towards the swimming area with a protective net in front of the lifeguard station.
What the sighting report documents
The public Dorsal sighting report lists the time as 11:35 a.m. and the location as “Proche La Pointe” in Étang-Salé. The entry records a single shark, an estimated length of 1.50 metres and a distance of around 50 metres from shore. The RESSAC rescue workers are listed as reporting observers.
The species was recorded in the report as a bull shark. Because the observation comes from a professional patrol and is named consistently in both sources, this identification is much more reliable than a spontaneous species guess from a short social media clip.
Nevertheless, an important caveat remains: no photo or video of the animal is attached to the public Dorsal entry, and Imaz Press uses an image specifically marked as an illustration. The reported species identification cannot therefore be independently verified from publicly available imagery.
Evacuation as a precaution
Evacuating the spot was a local safety decision. As soon as a larger shark approaches an area with surfers, swimmers or other water sports enthusiasts, those responsible can take people out of the water without alleging aggressive behavior on the part of the animal.
The report only describes swimming direction, size and position. It reports no attack, no approach to a specific person and no contact. The evacuation therefore does not make the sighting a shark attack , but rather documents the application of a precautionary protocol.
The wording for the bathing zone must also remain precise. The animal was observed heading towards the zone equipped with an anti-shark net. The sources do not say that the shark had entered the protected area or passed through the net.
Bull sharks in tropical coastal waters
The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) lives in tropical and subtropical coastal waters and can also use very shallow water. Sightings around islands in the Indian Ocean generally fit its known habitat. This makes the report biologically plausible, but says nothing about the behavior of this individual animal beyond the short observation period.
At around 1.50 meters, the reported shark was significantly smaller than large adult bull sharks. However, age and sex cannot be reliably inferred from the length estimate alone. The distance of 50 meters is also to be understood as a field indication and not as an exact measurement.
A single sighting does not prove either an increase in bull shark numbers off Réunion or a change in the level of risk. Such statements would require comparable data over a longer period of time: confirmed species, locations, environmental conditions, observation effort and repeated observations.
Local instructions take priority
In the event of a warning, the following applies to surfers, swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts: get out of the water calmly, keep your distance and follow the instructions of the rescue services. The animal should not be pursued, circled for photos, or fed.
Sighting reports are particularly useful when documenting timing, position, swimming direction, estimated length and observer. The entry of Étang-Salé contains this core data. An original photo or video would also have made it possible to have the species identification reviewed by experts.
The incident on August 9th remains a bull shark sighting that was treated as a precaution: an animal was reported near the spot, people left the water and no one was injured. Further statements about an attack, a passage through the net or a population trend cannot be drawn from the available information.
