Whale sharks and diving
The shark side is compact but interesting: whale sharks can appear in the greater Muscat area during the warm season. This is more of a boat-trip, snorkeling or surface-watching opportunity than a scuba dive that can be planned on command.
For divers, the classic Oman themes are just as important: reefs, turtles, rays, schools of fish and, depending on the site, calm coral gardens or rockier coastal structures. Anyone coming for whale sharks should allow several days and some flexibility.
Area and season
The main whale shark window is in summer, roughly from July to September. For general scuba diving, autumn, winter and spring are often more comfortable, while summer brings the better setup for plankton-linked whale shark sightings.
