Big Blue Divers

Big Blue Divers is located on North Coast Road in Mare Anglaise and has operated as a PADI 5 Star dive center since 1997. Its services include training, rental equipment, Nitrox 32 and trips to more than 75 dive sites around Mahé, as well as selected full-day excursions to other islands.

Four shark species in the area

The center’s dive-site map lists whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks and nurse sharks at several offshore reefs. In this region, the nurse shark is typically the tawny nurse shark. Biter Rock is particularly diverse, with all three groups listed alongside seasonal whale sharks.

Whitetip reef sharks and tawny nurse sharks are present throughout the year. Grey reef sharks are seen mainly at more distant, current-swept sites. Whale sharks are most likely from August to November.

Trips and conditions

A two-dive trip normally departs in the morning, followed by a single afternoon dive. Nearby sites are about 15 minutes away, while long and very long trips operate only in calm seas. Some offshore sites and wrecks require suitable experience and certification.

April and May and October and November often combine good visibility with calmer water. The southeast monsoon can bring more swell and plankton between May and September; this nutrient input is also relevant to whale sharks. Daily planning should therefore remain flexible.

All the sharks mentioned are observed in the wild during regular dives. There is no guarantee that a particular species will appear on the booked day. Guests focusing on grey reef sharks or whale sharks should mention this when enquiring and allow several possible days for trips.
