Blue Sea Divers is located directly on Beau Vallon beach near the La Plage restaurant. Established in 2002, the SSI dive center offers courses from beginner level through Divemaster, daily boat trips and small groups with no more than four divers per guide.
Diving with sharks off Mahé
Whitetip reef sharks may be encountered year-round at the granite and reef sites of northern Mahé. They often rest under overhangs or swim along the reef edge. Even at suitable sites, encounters are natural snapshots and cannot be guaranteed.
Whale sharks, by contrast, are seasonal visitors. The typical season off Mahé runs from August to November, often with the strongest chances in September and October. Blue Sea Divers mentions whale sharks during the more plankton-rich period but does not advertise a dedicated trip with a sighting guarantee.
Season, schedule and equipment
Diving is possible on Mahé throughout the year. The transition periods in April and May and in October and November are often especially pleasant and calm. During the southeast monsoon from May to September, the open sea may be rougher, while plankton-rich water increases the chances of whale sharks and manta rays.
The boats depart daily for two-dive trips. Depending on distance, the center visits nearby, more distant and very remote sites. Rental equipment, SSI training and nitrox mixtures up to 40 percent are part of the current services.
The shark dives are regular reef and boat dives without feeding. Which species actually appear depends on currents, visibility, weather and the animals’ movements. Guests specifically seeking whale sharks should plan several possible diving days and ask about recent sightings shortly before the trip.
