The University of Exeter is launching a new study of common thresher sharks (Alopias vulpinus) off the Isle of Wight. According to the university, it is the first targeted study of this shark species in UK waters.
The timing fits the story unusually well: while the island moves into its June festival season, a research project begins in the sea just off the coast, supported by Solo Music Agency. The agency was founded by John Giddings, organiser of the Isle of Wight Festival and a former Exeter student.
For shark research, the funding is more than a neat music connection. Common thresher sharks are seen off the Isle of Wight again and again in summer, but why they enter the northern Channel is still poorly understood. The pilot project is designed to close exactly that gap.
A distinctive shark at a possible key site
The common thresher is a large, wide-ranging pelagic shark that can reach up to six metres in length. Its most striking feature is the extremely long upper lobe of the tail. With that tail, the shark can herd or stun schooling fish before feeding.
Repeated sightings off the Isle of Wight suggest that the animals use the area seasonally. Exeter researchers think the shallower coastal waters may play a role in mating, young sharks or other important life stages. If that proves true, the region would be more important for the species than previously understood.
That matters because thresher sharks are under pressure from intensive fishing. Stocks have declined sharply in the Atlantic, while conservation measures often lack precise data on where the animals appear seasonally, which depths they use and which areas matter for reproduction or feeding.
Two tags for a hidden year
At the centre of the study are two high-performance electronic tags. They are to be attached to thresher sharks with the help of experienced recreational anglers on the Isle of Wight. That cooperation is crucial because local anglers have observed the rare animals for years and often know their seasonal patterns better than a short research trip could.
The tags remain on the sharks for about a year, then detach automatically and transmit the collected data. For researchers, that can reveal movements, depth use, possible feeding phases and residence areas that cannot be observed from boats or land.
For thresher sharks, that look below the surface is especially important. Sightings only show that an animal is present. Tracking data can show whether the sharks are merely passing through, returning regularly, using particular depths or staying for longer in a tightly defined area.
Why the study matters for conservation and shark diving
For divers, thresher sharks are rare encounters. They usually do not appear at easily planned sites like reef sharks, but follow productive edges, baitfish, currents and seasonal conditions. That is exactly why robust data is valuable: it separates chance sightings from genuinely important habitats.
If the waters off the Isle of Wight turn out to be a recurring hotspot, future conservation measures could become more precise. That could mean better seasonal attention, stronger consideration in fisheries rules or additional research into areas where young sharks or mating adults occur.
The study also shows how modern shark conservation often begins: not only through large state programmes, but through local observations, research teams, private supporters and people who are regularly on the water. In this case, the festival island is linked to a question that reaches far beyond summer.
A pilot project with a larger goal
Exeter describes the current work as a pilot project. The two tags are intended to create the foundation for a larger effort if the first data show that a broader study is worthwhile. The university is seeking further philanthropic support for that next step.
For the thresher sharks off the Isle of Wight, this first step could be decisive. As long as it remains unclear why they return each year, their protection remains vague. If the tags show which routes the animals take and which marine areas they truly need, a rare summer sighting becomes a concrete conservation task.
