According to the association VAGUES, the Requins en Danger coalition submitted an administrative appeal to the prefect of Réunion on 16 September 2026. According to Zinfos974, it is demanding tighter limits on the shark fishing programmes run by the Centre Sécurité Requin.
Fewer interventions, greater oversight
The coalition is calling for a ban on horizontal bottom longlines, citing a decree from 1996. This is its interpretation of the law; the report contains no confirmation by an authority or court.
Other demands concern geographical restrictions on fishing, protection of sensitive marine areas and independent observers. Photographs and video should document operations, and catch summaries should once again be published monthly.
If its appeal is rejected, the coalition says it will take the matter to the administrative court. The report published on 20 September documents neither a decision by the prefect nor a halt to the programmes.
Political debate is already under way
We previously reported on funding for shark safety for 2026. Continued preventive fishing was also to be discussed again with state authorities. The present appeal is a separate initiative by the coalition.
