Coral Coast Divers is a dive centre in Pacific Harbour on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. The base is located at one of the best-known shark diving areas in the South Pacific: Beqa Lagoon. The main focus is the shark dive site “The Colosseum”, where Coral Coast Divers offers guided shark dives. The dive centre combines classic dive trips, SSI courses, reef dives, wreck dives and dedicated shark dives.
Shark diving
The central offer is the Fiji Shark Dive in Beqa Lagoon. The dive takes place at “The Colosseum”, a site with depths of around 18 to 20 metres. According to Coral Coast Divers, it is a structured two-tank dive with clear safety procedures, briefings and fixed rules of behaviour. During the first dive, divers remain stationary on the seabed while experienced guides and shark feeders feed the sharks. During the second dive, food is offered more freely, which the operator says can especially attract tiger sharks from deeper water.
Several shark species can be observed on the shark dives. Coral Coast Divers lists bull sharks, tiger sharks, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks and silvertip sharks. Up to eight shark species may be seen on one dive.
Requirements and schedule
According to the operator, the Fiji Shark Dive is open to divers with an Open Water certification. Before the dive, certifications are checked, equipment is inspected and safety and behaviour rules are explained. The boat ride to the dive site takes about 35 minutes. The day usually starts at the dive centre at around 7:30 a.m. and ends between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m.. Coral Coast Divers clearly notes that the shark dives are not exploratory dives, but follow a strict plan. Anyone who does not follow the safety rules can be excluded from the dive.
