Abyss Scuba Diving is a dive centre in Ramsgate, New South Wales, south of Sydney. The centre offers dive courses, local guided dives, boat dives, weekend trips and dedicated wildlife dives. On its own website, Abyss describes itself as a PADI 5-Star Centre and notes that it has been active since 2000.
Shark diving
The shark programme focuses on grey nurse sharks around Sydney. Abyss describes the local shark dives as one of the region’s best-known wildlife experiences and highlights Magic Point as an important dive site. Divers can see grey nurse sharks there in their natural habitat, without a cage and without a glass barrier. The encounters are aimed at certified divers; according to the operator, many local shark and seal dives are suitable for Open Water divers, while some shark dives recommend more experience or an Advanced level.
In addition to grey nurse sharks, Abyss also names other possible shark species and marine life from the region, including wobbegong sharks, Port Jackson sharks, and occasional blind sharks and crested horn sharks.
Seal diving and wildlife trips
Alongside the shark dives, Abyss also offers seal dives, especially at Martin Island near Port Kembla. The operator describes this tour as a double boat dive with playful encounters with Australian fur seals. The main season for Martin Island is given as June to October; according to Abyss, July to September are the best months for high seal numbers and active interactions.
For divers looking for more than local day trips, Abyss also lists weekend trips to Montague Island and Forster. Forster is described as a larger wildlife destination where sharks, seals and more demanding dives come together. For Forster, Abyss recommends Advanced Open Water or confident divers with recent dive experience.
