In the depths of the Red Sea off the Egyptian resort of Marsa Alam, a serious shark attack occurred. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, the two victims were outside the designated swimming area when they were attacked. A 48-year-old tourist from Rome lost his life, while a 69-year-old was taken to Port Ghalib Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations and precautionary measures

The Ministry of Environment immediately set up an emergency committee to investigate the incident. The closure of the affected coastal section for at least two days is intended to ensure the safety of further holidaymakers. In the past, there have been similar incidents on Egypt’s coasts, most recently in Hurghada, which also led to beach closures.
