A surfer was injured in a suspected shark attack on Glenfield Beach at Geraldton in Western Australia on Monday, September 14, 2026. WAtoday reported a man in his 50s who was brought to Geraldton Hospital with leg injuries. His condition was described as serious but stable.
The Fisheries Authority DPIRD announced via SharkSmart that a report of a possible shark incident was received at around 9:45 a.m. local time. The investigation was still ongoing at the time of the announcement. The authority did not name the shark species or size of the animal.
Second surfer and teenagers helped with the rescue
According to WAtoday’s report, another surfer noticed the injured man about 40 meters from the shore, swam to him and brought him to shore. Young people are said to have then helped with first aid and stopped severe bleeding in the leg with a tourniquet. According to a statement from the City of Greater Geraldton reproduced by WAtoday, a portion of Glenfield Beach has been temporarily closed south of the intersection of Glenfield Beach Drive and Surfside Terrace at the beach emergency sign CGG22.
DPIRD advises you to be particularly careful in the Glenfield Beach area and to observe closures and instructions from the responsible emergency services. The authority is working with local authorities and will announce further information as it becomes available.

According to a September 15 report by ABC News, the injured surfer is Mel Ismail from Geraldton. His surfboard is to be examined to identify the shark species involved. The report gives no result from this examination, so the species remains unconfirmed.
In a further report on September 15, ABC News says Ismail remains in a serious but stable condition at Geraldton Health Campus. According to intensive care unit head Mary Pinder, the severity of his injuries means he faces a long recovery. His family thanked the local community and hospital staff and asked for their privacy to be respected.
According to that report, Glenfield Beach remained closed on September 15. Examination of the damaged surfboard to identify the shark species was still underway. This more recent report therefore also provides no confirmed species identification.
