The pregnant wife of Italian basketball professional Danilo Gallinari, Eleonora Boi, was injured in a suspected shark attack in Puerto Rico. According to the environmental and nature conservation authority of the US territory, the 39-year-old suffered an open wound on her thigh while swimming on Thursday. The injuries were immediately treated in hospital – according to official reports, Boi is in a stable condition.
For safety reasons, her identity was not initially released. Only later did Captain Ruben Moyeno of the Carolina city police confirm to the press that the injured woman was the wife of Danilo Gallinari and that she was pregnant.
Gallinari playing for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rico
The 36-year-old former NBA player Gallinari is currently under contract with Vaqueros de Bayamon and is playing in the finals of the Puerto Rican league BSN with the team. The first game against Leones de Ponce is scheduled for Sunday at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez.
Despite the scare surrounding his family, Gallinari plans to continue his career in the national team. He was recently nominated for the Italian squad for EuroBasket 2025 and intends to join the team’s training camp under head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco after the BSN finals.
Italy will play in preliminary group C in Limassol (Cyprus) against Greece, Georgia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spain, and the host country. The top four teams will qualify for the knockout round, which will be held in September in Riga (Latvia).
