A 13-year-old boy was killed in a shark attack at a busy beach in northeastern Brazil. The incident occurred in the early morning near the city of Recife, a coastal area known for occasional shark attacks over the years.
According to local authorities, the boy was in shallow water with a friend when the attack happened. Witnesses reported that the shark suddenly appeared and severely injured the teenager. Emergency services arrived a few minutes later but could only confirm the child’s death. The second teenager remained unharmed.
Medical reports describe massive injuries to the legs, consistent with a single, rapid attack. Experts believe it was a large coastal shark. However, a definitive species identification is not possible, as the animal was neither sighted nor captured.
The affected region has had a special monitoring and prevention programme in place for years. This includes warning signs, drone surveillance and temporary bathing bans. Despite these measures, incidents continue to occur along the coast of Recife. Scientific studies attribute this, among other things, to changes in coastal ecology, harbour constructions and altered currents, which can bring sharks closer to the shore.
Local authorities closed the beach immediately after the incident and announced a review of existing safety measures. Representatives of the city administration emphasised that shark attacks remain extremely rare and do not pose a targeted threat to bathers.
