Mikomoto Hammers is based in Minami-Izu at the southern end of the Izu Peninsula. The center runs boats to Mikomoto Island, a small offshore rock in the Kuroshio current. The programme is for certified divers with recent practice and is clearly built around open-water drift dives.
Shark diving
Shark encounters are scuba drift dives, not snorkelling. The target species is the scalloped hammerhead; the best window is usually June to October. Schools can appear in blue water when conditions line up, but sightings remain natural. The area is demanding: current, open water, quick descents and clean group procedure are part of the normal profile.
Kuroshio and blue water
Beyond hammerheads, Mikomoto is about Kuroshio water, rock structure and big fish. Amberjack, barracuda, tuna and other pelagics are possible depending on the day. This is not an easy coral reef, but a sporty offshore site for divers who actively want current and blue water.
