A young great white shark named Joe is providing researchers with a new piece of the puzzle about the species’ migrations around New Zealand. The ten-year-old shark appeared in the north of the South Island at the weekend – just a week after its transmitter located it off the west coast of Auckland.

The marine biologist Dr. Riley Elliott, who has been researching sharks for more than 15 years, described Joe as the first Great white shark that he tracked via transmitter into the Abel Tasman region. This does not mean the first sighting of the species in the region, but rather a new route within its tracking data set.
Thousands of kilometers since the end of January
Joe was tagged with a station at the end of January 2026. Since then he has traveled thousands of kilometers, crossed the Tasman Sea and moved between New Zealand and Australia. Its detections to date range from sub-Antarctic waters to the Coral Sea. This results in an unusually varied travel route for a single shark.
What was particularly surprising was the speed of his recent change of location. Around seven days earlier, Joe was registered on Ninety Mile Beach on New Zealand’s North Island. Elliott had expected that he might move to Kaipara Harbour. Instead, the shark continued to swim south and shortly thereafter appeared in the area of Abel Tasman.
A route is not yet a general migration pattern
The value of observation for research lies precisely in the fact that Joe does not follow a simple scheme. According to Elliott, the more animals are marked, the more clearly it becomes clear that white sharks choose very different paths. Some animals spend a long time in one area, others move quickly between temperate, subantarctic and subtropical waters.
Joe Trace therefore does not prove that the distribution area of the entire population suddenly shifted to Abel Tasman. Great white sharks have generally been recorded around New Zealand. What is new here is the detailed, temporally coherent look at a well-known individual who connects very different regions.
Are young seals the reason for the detour?
After Joe arrived, users of the Elliott shark tracking app reported that there were young seals in the region at this time of year. This raises a plausible question: Could Joe follow a previously neglected foraging area? This is still just a hypothesis. A single location shows neither whether the shark is hunting there nor how long it stays.
The Profile of the New Zealand Department of Conservation classifies that white sharks in New Zealand are particularly frequently observed near large seal colonies. In addition to fish and other sharks, their documented diet also includes several species of seal. This makes the assumption biologically understandable, but does not replace direct evidence of Joe behavior.
Transmitter data also shows the dangers along the way
The route not only passes through different habitats, but also through areas with intensive fishing. According to Stuff, Joe’s journey passed through regions with large international trawlers, Australian shark protection nets and numerous gillnets off Northland. The fact that his transmitter continues to provide data at least shows that it has survived these phases so far.
For Elliott, broken tracks are therefore part of the overall picture of the project. If a transmitter goes permanently silent, it could be caused by a captured or killed shark. However, a missing signal alone is not certain proof of death: transmitters can become loose, fail or temporarily not transmit a usable position. The decisive factor is additional data or a rediscovered transmitter.
Great white sharks are fully protected in New Zealand
New Zealand has protected great white sharks since 2007. The Department of Conservation lists the species nationally as threatened and nationally endangered; internationally it is considered endangered. Fisheries still remain a key threat because the highly migratory animals cross national borders, protection regimes and very differently regulated marine areas.
Previous genetic surveys and satellite tagging have already shown movements between New Zealand, Australia and the southwest Pacific. Joe Travel fits into this large-scale picture, but supplements it with a connection to the Abel Tasman region project that has not yet been documented for the Elliott project. This is precisely the scientific value of a single animal tracked over many months.
What tracking means for people on the coast
The position of a great white shark off Nelson-Tasman is not evidence of a sudden increase in numbers or an automatic warning of an attack. Coastal waters, bays and shallow water areas are part of the natural habitat of young and adult great white sharks. Individual transmitter points say little about how frequently an area is used.
Joe is nevertheless valuable for research: its trace connects widely separated habitats, makes the speed of such changes of location visible and provides new questions about possible feeding sites. Only when other animals choose similar paths can it be assessed whether Abel Tasman is a regularly used corridor or just a stop on the extraordinary journey of a particularly mobile shark.
