A shark surprised two divers during an afternoon dive at Plompe Toren in the Dutch Oosterschelde. Bram Lamens and Lydia Verseput encountered the animal on 3 October 2026 at a depth of approximately 25 metres. Duikersgids reported the sighting on 5 October and identifies the animal as a spiny dogfish.

The camera was already recording during the descent. As one of the divers looked at their dive computer, the shark swam past. Lamens published the footage on his YouTube channel, ā€˜De Lachende Inktvis Bram Lamens’. The divers’ surprised reaction can be heard in the original video.

More Information

Estimated length, identification from the sighting report

The observers estimate the shark’s length at around 1.20 to 1.40 metres. The video description also gives this size range and a depth of approximately 25 metres. The report does not provide a measured length or independent expert confirmation of the species. Spiny dogfish is therefore presented here as the reported identification.

Encounter at a dive site with strong currents

Plompe Toren is near Burgh-Haamstede in Zeeland. Duikersgids describes it as a challenging site, with sometimes strong currents and limited visibility. This single filmed encounter does not establish how frequently spiny dogfish occur there or whether their population is increasing.
