Incident at Port Noarlunga Jetty
A swimmer was attacked by a shark on Thursday morning in Port Noarlunga. According to the South Australian ambulance service, the man suffered a severe thigh injury. He was initially treated on-site and then taken to hospital. His condition is critical but stable.
Police cordoned off the area around the jetty and evacuated the water. Port Noarlunga, located about 40 minutes south of Adelaide, is particularly popular with snorkelers and divers.
Concerns among locals grow
This is not the first shark attack on this stretch of coast: In 2023, a 32-year-old student was injured on the head by a shark in Port Noarlunga. At that time, South Australia recorded five attacks within a year, three of which were fatal.
Residents like Neil Errey, who happened to be at the scene again, are increasingly concerned about the rise in shark sightings. “It’s a bit worrying,” he said. Bob Newman, who swims there almost daily, is reconsidering whether to continue his routine after the incident.
Algal bloom could be the cause
Marine specialists suspect a link to a toxic algal bloom that has recently occurred along the coast. Several dead sharks have washed up on nearby beaches, which marine biologists say may indicate possible poisoning. However, it remains unclear whether the increased shark presence is related to these environmental factors.
