Wildlife With Cookie runs full-day blue shark snorkelling trips from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire. The experience is for confident swimmers who want to encounter sharks in the open Atlantic. It is specifically a snorkelling trip, not a conventional scuba dive.
Snorkelling with blue sharks
The boat travels far offshore from the Welsh coast. After about two and a half hours it reaches the intended search area, sets up a drift and lowers scent bags into the water. Blue sharks are the target species. Porbeagle, thresher and shortfin mako sharks also inhabit these waters, but the operator mentions them only as possible surprises.
Before anyone enters the water, the experienced guide explains the procedure and safety rules. Encounters depend on wild-animal behaviour, weather, sea state and visibility. Dolphins, gannets, razorbills and puffins may also appear during the long journey; minke and fin whales are rarer possibilities.
Schedule and requirements
The day is planned for approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Boat charter, guide, tea, coffee and hot chocolate are included. Food, drinking water, personal insurance and travel to Milford Haven are not included. Snorkelling equipment can be hired for an additional charge.
Participants must be at least 16 years old and able to swim confidently. Those aged 16 or 17 need an accompanying adult. A full-length wetsuit, gloves, mask, snorkel and fins are mandatory in the water, and the operator’s participant form must also be completed.
