Off Malibu in California on 4 October 2026, a kayak angler was bitten twice by a shark and taken to hospital. According to the ABC7 report, the man had caught the animal while fishing and was trying to release it. The broadcaster cites the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

First bite during release

The incident happened on Sunday morning near Paradise Cove. According to the fire department, the shark bit the angler as he tried to release it. The man then fell out of his kayak into the water, where the animal bit him a second time. Emergency crews received the report at around 8:32 a.m. local time.

Fire department calls it a fishing accident

The fire department initially described the incident as a shark attack and later as a fishing accident. The capture and release context distinguishes it from an encounter while swimming. The beach remained open. No further details about the injured man’s condition were available when ABC7 published its report.

CBS Los Angeles, citing lifeguards, reports a mako and a bite to the leg.

Earlier sighting was a separate event

A hammerhead shark at Malibu Pier was filmed back in August. That sighting was a separate event; no link to the current biting incident has been established.
