Discovery Diving takes divers from Beaufort to the shipwrecks of the so-called Graveyard of the Atlantic. These historic vessels form artificial reefs above the sand and attract large schools of fish, rays, turtles and some of the best-known shark species found off North Carolina.
Diving with sharks
Sand tiger sharks are seen at numerous wrecks. Spar, Schurz, Aeolus, Caribsea, Papoose and Atlas are particularly well known for encounters. The sharks often hover calmly in the current or cruise between the wreck structure and schools of fish.
The deeper wreck Naeco may also hold blacktip and sandbar sharks alongside sand tigers. Which species appears depends on the dive site, season, Gulf Stream, visibility and weather. A particular species or number of sharks can therefore never be guaranteed.
Most charter dives are conducted independently with a buddy. A divemaster can be requested for an additional fee. For deeper full-day trips, Discovery Diving requires experience to at least 100 feet, at least 30 logged dives and one dive within the previous twelve months. Divers should bring their certification card and logbook.
Season and best time to visit
Sand tiger sharks have been documented off North Carolina throughout the year, with many reports from the central wrecks in spring and summer. Blacktip sharks move into North Carolina waters during the warmer season and begin migrating south again in September and October. Sandbar sharks can also occur year-round near Cape Hatteras, with the highest number of detections from November through April.
Discovery Diving describes May through October as its prime season, when air and water are warmest and visibility is often best. This is also the most dependable period for regular charters. Even then, sea state, current, visibility and the animals’ current distribution determine which wreck can be visited and which sharks may be seen.
Charters, experience and equipment
Trips range from shallower half-day outings and regular two-tank days to three-tank and specialty charters. Cylinders and equipment are not included in the charter price but can be rented from the dive center; air, 30-percent Nitrox, and aluminum and steel cylinders are available. Guests should arrive 45 minutes before departure and bring their own food and drinks. The dive destination, price, possible fuel surcharge and any requested guide should be confirmed before booking.
