The salmon shark Lamna ditropis is a powerful mackerel shark in the Lamniformes. On Haitauchen it sits within Selachii, Galeomorphi, Lamnidae and the genus Lamna.
FishBase describes the species as a fusiform pelagic-oceanodromous shark of the North Pacific. Standard summaries give a maximum length of about 3.05 m, a maximum published weight near 175 kg and a more common length around 1.8 m.
Key identification traits
Useful traits include a uniformly dark first dorsal fin without a pale free rear tip, a dark blue-grey to black back, a white underside with dusky blotches and a strong crescent-shaped tail with a main and secondary keel.
The species is sometimes confused with young white sharks in the North Pacific. In photographs, first-dorsal colour, belly blotches, short snout and tail keels are the best clues.
Distribution & habitat
The salmon shark is a North Pacific shark. Florida Museum describes it from the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk through the Bering Sea to the North American Pacific coast; Haitauchen currently links it with China, Japan, Canada, Mexico, North Korea, Russia, Taiwan and USA.
It is typical of cool to cold-temperate, productive waters. The species uses continental shelf and offshore areas, but can also appear close to shore and in very shallow water.
Cool North Pacific waters
NOAA Repository includes movement data showing seasonal shifts between shelf, open-ocean and coastal areas. Many movements follow prey and temperature, and age or sex groups may be spatially separated.
For divers, this matters: the salmon shark is not a classic reef shark or a reliable dive target. Encounters are more plausible in productive cool North Pacific waters.
Life history, diet & reproduction
Salmon sharks are fast active predators. They feed mainly on fishes and may occur alone, in schools or in feeding aggregations. The common name reflects the strong connection with North Pacific salmon.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game highlights the ability to keep body temperature above surrounding water temperature. This regional endothermy is typical of lamnids and helps salmon sharks remain powerful in cold water.
Endothermy and reproduction
The species is aplacental viviparous. Embryos develop inside the mother and feed on additional eggs after the yolk is used, a mode called oophagy. FishBase lists up to four young per litter.
Young and adult sharks can use different areas, and adults may move farther north. That spatial separation matters when interpreting local sightings or catch data.
Threats & conservation status
The IUCN Red List lists Lamna ditropis globally as Least Concern. That does not make fishing pressure irrelevant; it means the global assessment does not currently place the species in a threatened category.
The species is taken as bycatch and in minor commercial fisheries. It is also a gamefish, and meat, fins, hide and liver may be used depending on region and market.
Fisheries and regional monitoring
With a very small litter size, local pressure may still be slow to offset. Management therefore needs good catch data, accurate identification and attention to regional populations.
Salmon shark & humans
The salmon shark is not a typical conflict shark, but it is a large fast predator. Technical sources treat it as potentially dangerous, while noting that it has rarely or never been implicated in attacks on people.
In practice, fisheries, research handling and rare encounters at sea matter more than attack scenarios. A caught or harassed salmon shark can be dangerous through size, tail strikes and teeth.
