Incident at the Jetty of Port Noarlunga
A swimmer was attacked by a Shark on Thursday morning in Port Noarlunga. According to the South Australian rescue service, the man suffered a severe injury to his thigh. He was initially treated on site and then taken to the hospital. His condition is critical but stable.
The police cordoned off the area around the jetty and evacuated the water. Port Noarlunga is located about 40 minutes south of Adelaide and is especially popular with snorkelers and divers.
Concern among locals grows
This is not the first shark attack in this coastal area: in 2023, a 32-year-old student was injured on the head by a shark in Port Noarlunga. At that time, South Australia recorded five attacks within one year, three of which were fatal.
Residents like Neil Errey, who happened to be at the scene again, are increasingly expressing concerns about the rise in shark sightings. "That’s a bit worrying," he said. Bob Newman, who swims there almost daily, is also considering whether to continue his routine after the incident.
Algal Bloom Could Be The Cause
Marine specialists suspect a connection with a toxic algal bloomthat has recently occurred along the coast. Several dead sharks have washed up on nearby beaches, which marine biologists say may indicate possible poisoning. However, it remains unclear whether the increased shark presence is related to these environmental factors.
