The largest great white shark ever documented is on the move again. Following the latest tracking signal, experts believe the male named Contender is heading toward the popular vacation region of Nova Scotia.

The roughly 14-foot-long (about 4.3 meters) and approximately 1,653-pound (about 750 kilograms) predator was detected again on August 2. It was a so-called Z-ping, which occurs when the tracker reaches the water’s surface, confirming that the animal has spent time there.

Current data and suspected route

The non-profit organization OCEARCH, which tracks marine animals with tags, stated that the tag on the roughly 30-year-old male continues to work reliably, recording ongoing movements and surface contacts.

Contender was last regularly located on July 18 off Cape Cod. Since then, the data indicate he has been moving northeast toward Nova Scotia. Further detections in the coming days will show whether the shark is indeed heading for that section of the Canadian coast.
