The government of Goa state is launching a nationwide unique protection vessel on International Whale Shark Day. The aim is to better protect whale sharks, sea turtles, and other species. This was announced by Forest Minister Vishwajit Pratapsingh Rane in Panaji.

Vessel with full equipment and reward program
According to Rane, the seaworthy vessel will be “equipped with all necessary facilities” – the first of its kind in India, dedicated exclusively to marine conservation. Procurement and operation will be carried out under the professional guidance of renowned conservationist Prof. B. C. Choudhury and other experts.
To strengthen conservation efforts, Goa is introducing a reward system: fishers or private individuals who rescue and release whale sharks or other species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) will receive a compensation of ₹75,000.
Expert panel and broad participation
A high-level committee chaired by Prof. Choudhury will oversee the protection of marine species. The panel includes, among others, Vivek Menon, Praveen Kumar Raghaw, Shamila Monteiro, Francis “Pele” Fernandes, and Minister Rane. Fernandes, who has already raised awareness among Goa’s fishing community in the past, is expected to once again act as a bridge to the community.

With its vessel, reward program, and expert council, Goa aims to position itself as India’s “capital of marine conservation.”
