Montego Bay, Jamaica: Reef shark bites off British woman's finger

Dramatic Moments on the Beach in Montego Bay – Jamaica

British Tourist Attacked by Shark in Jamaica

A beach holiday in Jamaica turned into a nightmare for 26-year-old Rachel Smith from Newham, England. In early May, while swimming in waist-deep water off Rose Hall Beach in Montego Bay with her sister Lisa, the young pharmacologist was attacked by a shark.

“Suddenly, we were thrown into the air,” Rachel recalled in an interview with People magazine. Moments later, she noticed that her left ring finger was missing. “I was in complete shock. My hand was numb — I thought I’d lost it entirely.”

Lisa acted quickly, pulling her sister from the water and alerting other beachgoers. “There was blood everywhere. I really thought her fingers were completely gone,” she told the Daily Mail. “At one point, a vein burst and blood sprayed all over us. We were just crying, thinking she was going to die.”

Emergency Surgery in Ireland – A Long Road to Recovery

Rachel received initial treatment in Jamaica. However, due to the lack of a plastic surgeon on the island, she was transferred to Ireland for specialist care. At Cork University Hospital, doctors diagnosed torn tendons and nerves in her ring and little fingers, as well as damaged ligaments.

Despite the severe injuries, Rachel was fortunate: she was able to keep her hand and now hopes to regain most of its function within the next 18 months.

“I’m just grateful to be alive — and even more grateful I didn’t lose my hand,” she said. “The journey to full recovery will be long, but I’m staying positive and believe I’ll get there.”
