Coiba Dive Center is a PADI dive centre in Santa Catalina on Panama’s Pacific coast. Boats leave from here for Coiba National Park, one of the most impressive marine protected areas in the Gulf of Chiriqui. Diving around Coiba means wild Pacific scenery with reefs, rock formations, drop-offs and current-swept sites – and very good chances of shark encounters.
Shark diving
Around Coiba you can dive with several shark species. Whitetip reef sharks and blacktip reef sharks are the more likely reef encounters, while scalloped hammerheads add a special seasonal draw. Tiger sharks are also possible, but they are much rarer sightings.
Coiba Dive Center puts a clear focus on these encounters. The shark guarantee for three-tank days shows how naturally sharks belong to the diving here, even though no individual species can be planned. For shark divers, the mix is attractive: year-round reef shark chances, a hammerhead season from March to August and the possibility, with some luck, of seeing a tiger shark.
Coiba National Park and trips
The classic day trip to Coiba National Park combines two dives at different sites with an island break. Transport, equipment, food and guiding are built around a full dive day in the protected area. Divers with more time can choose multi-day trips and travel deeper into the national park.
Coiba National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and protects an exceptionally rich part of the tropical eastern Pacific. Underwater, coral areas, rocky reefs, blue-water zones and sites with noticeable current alternate with one another. Visibility, current and wildlife encounters can change significantly by season and dive site; good buoyancy, calm behaviour and enough experience make shark dives here much more relaxed.
Practical notes
The base is on Calle Principal in Santa Catalina and organises day trips, multi-day tours and PADI courses from there. Coiba National Park is a protected area, so park rules, permits and respect for wildlife are part of the trip. For divers coming to Panama specifically for sharks, Coiba Dive Center is a direct entry point into one of the country’s most exciting regions.
