A woman in her late twenties was rescued from the water at Norton Point on Martha’s Vineyard on 31 August 2026 with injuries to her lower leg. Emergency crews were called to the beach near Edgartown at about 1:40 p.m. According to the town, the injuries were not life-threatening.
The MV Times initially reported radio traffic from rescuers and cited a beachgoer who said the woman had been bitten by something in shallow water. A later statement from the town of Edgartown described the wounds as consistent with a bite from a marine animal and a possible shark bite.
No shark seen or confirmed
Neither a shark nor any other marine animal was seen or confirmed in direct connection with the incident. It is therefore not known which animal caused the injuries or whether a shark was involved. The species and size of any possible shark are also entirely unknown.
The description as a possible shark bite is so far based on the appearance of the injuries, not on a sighting or a published forensic examination. Rescue on the beach and precautionary closure

CBS News Boston published a statement from town administrator James Hagerty. Swimming at South Beach was suspended for several hours while town staff assessed conditions. Police and emergency crews also temporarily closed access to Norton Point.
Rangers warned beachgoers about reported shark sightings, and aircraft searched the water. These precautions do not establish that a shark caused the injuries in this specific incident. No matching sighting has yet been publicly confirmed.
