Florida Fisherman Charged After Shark Stabbing
Viral Clip Leads to Animal Cruelty Charges
A Florida Keys fisherman is facing felony animal cruelty charges after a disturbing video surfaced online showing him repeatedly stabbing a shark. Zane P. Garrett, 26, of Stock Island, was arrested Thursday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in connection with the incident.
Authorities received tips on May 23 about a man attacking a shark caught on a fishing line before cutting it loose. The video, which went viral, includes the caption “bud broke my rod” and shows the man violently stabbing the shark. Garrett later admitted to the act and was identified as the captain of the boat involved.
A Growing Spotlight on Marine Animal Abuse
Garrett operates Second Nature Charters out of Key West, where he offers guided fishing trips starting at $900. His website promotes adventures filled with “laughter” and “epic catches.” However, his recent actions sparked public outrage and highlighted concerns over treatment of marine life.
“The careless cruelty displayed in this video is unacceptable,” said Major Alberto Maza of the FWC. “I’m proud of the public for reporting this senseless act.” According to local station WPLG, Garrett allegedly attacked the shark for stealing his catch.
FWC officials pointed out that such shark behavior—biting engines or stealing fish—is a byproduct of healthy ecosystems. Their advice to fishers: relocate when sharks are active.
This case follows a similar incident in May where another Florida captain was sentenced to 30 days for shooting and poisoning dolphins in front of children.
