The Government of the Maldives, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has initiated a Tech4Nature conservation project aimed at strengthening the protection of whale sharks in Maldivian waters. The project seeks to apply modern digital monitoring technologies to enhance the understanding and safeguarding of these iconic marine giants, which are globally recognised as endangered.

Aligned with the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas standard, the initiative will leverage tools such as remote sensing, data analytics and other digital solutions to improve surveillance and generate actionable insights for conservation management. By harnessing innovative technologies, the project is intended to modernise efforts to monitor whale shark populations, inform policy measures and bolster enforcement against threats to their wellbeing.

This effort builds on the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to whale shark conservation. Whale sharks in the region have been under protective regulations for decades and are a key focus for marine biodiversity efforts due to their ecological importance and vulnerability. The Maldives’ clear waters and rich marine ecosystems make the archipelago one of the few places in the world where these gentle giants can be regularly observed, increasing both scientific interest and tourism value.

Through this project, authorities and partners aim to strengthen real-time monitoring capabilities, support evidence-based management of critical habitats, and enhance the long-term survival prospects of whale sharks across the Indian Ocean.
